Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 – Episode 8 Speculation
The Yuuki is dead edition … with pictures! In light of all the theories about the situation with Yuuki, here are some subtle clues the show gives out.

Yuuki suddenly collapses and is sent off to the hospital. I almost fell for the killing off Yuuki nightmare stunt they were trying to pull off, but I figured as much Mirai already had a million other nightmares before it, so this one has to be fake too. I think I’m ready to move to Mari’s storyline now. I believe these kids have experienced pretty much everything they could outside of the writers killing them off, which I seriously doubt would ever happen. Both have undergone some major hardships and have matured (especially Mirai) in such a short period. It’s only been what, a couple of days since the first earthquake hit Tokyo and Mirai has transitioned from one of the most unlikable characters to a half decent girl! Yeah half decent, that’s all I got for her.

Neglecting too much of the episode itself, I was too preoccupied with thoughts of whether these god damn robots were real or not. The show touts its realism based on real-world simulations, so I better be able to find these robots on the internet. Lo and behold … they sure got me.
Well I did manage to find one … here’s the thing that saved Kento’s parents.

Mari begins to feel very concerned for her own daughter as news of fires spread near her home. I guess I will start with my weekly Mirai/Yuuki rant. What the fuck is wrong with these kids? Did we not spend two freaking episodes or whatever making sure the god damn group stays together and doesn’t go dilly dallying wherever they want to? Did they not make a promise so the nonsense these kids pull off by leaving Mari without telling her co-worker Aya where they are going does not happen?
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 – 05
The group gets some well needed rest, but face the reality of the earthquake’s impact. First thing first, Mirai is completely normal in this episode. The bitchy attitude is absent this episode. It’s a miracle I tell you, even with all the crying she does at the end, it is more than acceptable. What differentiates this episode from the previous four is that the show finally begins to focus on the earthquake’s impact on the citizens of Tokyo. What best establishes this is the scene in which Mirai opens the door to the church only to see the many deceased mourned over by their families.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 – 04
Oh no, another week of Mirai bitchiness! When will this madness stop! Oh well, at least there was some justification for her attitude. I mean, the writers couldn’t have thought of more blatant and overly scripted events to piss off Mirai (someone stepping on her foot, having hot ramen spilled on her leg, someone cutting her in line to go to the bathroom, and finally dropping her emergency bag). That and I could see how her overly positive brother could get on anyone’s nerve. I’m not even going to mention the first half of the show where she’s holding it in for an eternity because she’s too embarrassed to go. However, Yuuki’s mini demonstration on how to use a portable toilet was gold, fart sounds and all.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 – 03
My favorite episode so far. Well that’s not saying much, but whatever. Mari is an awesome pretend mother to these kids. I still did not appreciate the Mirai bitching and overall attitude, but she is coming around this episode. I think the animators did a better job this time of portraying the sense of a large-scale impact this earthquake had. I am actually looking forward to the episode next week. We also learn Mari is a single mother, but who knows what that has to do with anything in the large-scale of things. Maybe she should ditch these kids and look for her own child.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 – 02
Um … I’m feeling a little … unimpressed by the entire earthquake ordeal. I understand they are going for a very real atmosphere and all, but I think they did a very poor job of animating the earthquake as it happened. I don’t know … it makes the entire situation far less catastrophic than what they are trying to portray. Looking back at it, the problem is that in one of the largest cities in the world, they neglected to draw a TON of people on-screen at once. Some shots look very barren of people and cars … at a robot convention of all places … in Japan! … come on I refuse to believe that. Anyway whatever I guess, just a normal rant.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 – 01
Emo girl destroys Tokyo through the power of text messaging? Japanese phones are no toys. All kidding aside (though that would have been a cooler story no?) the premise of this show revolves around a “what-if” scenario of an earthquake registering an 8.0 on the Richter scale hitting Tokyo. Just to put that into perspective, the scale is on a 1 – 10, and according to Wikipedia (the best source material available thank you very much) 10 has never occurred, so … 8.0 is pretty damn dangerous if you were ever caught in one.
