Highschool of the Dead – 02
Looks like Hirano Kohta wins the best character of the episode award. I was coming into this episode waiting for Saeko to turn up since chicks with swords are always cool. However, Kohta emerges with a crazy nerd-like fanaticism for guns and displays a lust for shooting all things dead. That and his awkward interactions with the ever so stuck-up Takagi prove to be entertaining.
As for the two new characters, I suppose the show needs a bimbo’ish and not-all-there blonde nurse and our rag-tag group does need adult supervision so it’s all good.
Saeko seems so far to be exactly how I envisioned her, calm, collective, and having an inner desire to annihilate the walking dead. I mean what better way for her to practice her swordsmanship without having to hold back.
An interesting point of note is that the zombies are blind, so as far as we know. That raises the question as to if and when a higher level of zombie, ones that can actually see or run faster than a snail for example, will start to emerge to give our high-schoolers and a ditsy nurse somewhat of a challenge.
The story is headed towards the group checking up on whether family members are safe or not, sounds like a reasonable plan to me. That and we’ll see just how wide-spread the zombie infestation really is.
Despite only two episodes, Highschool of the Dead is keeping things relatively simple with good pacing, solid characters, and just enough hyper-violent stimulation. Let’s hope it keeps it up.
