Naruto Shippuden – 167
There hasn’t been an episode of this caliber since the original Naruto vs. Sasuke fight way back when. You know you are in for a good episode when the first thing you notice is that the art style has shifted to less character detail in exchange for full on hyper-fluid animation. I really enjoyed the various stages of the Nine-Tails developing over Naruto’s body, the exo-skeleton was a nice touch and really made Naruto’s animal instincts and movements oh so better.
Pain otherwise took a beating of a life time, though of course he probably didn’t feel a thing since it’s not his real body as he got his head smashed into by nothing less than the side of a freaking mountain Looney Toons style. I did quite enjoy his super-duper gravitational pull into creating a full-blown mini-moon, Naruto getting caught in its black hole quality pull.
Loved the cliff hanger ending to this episode. The Fourth Hokage making an appearance was pretty neat-o in my book. Though I did kind of wanted to see Naruto succumbing to his despair and allowing the Nine-Tails to fully overcome him. I wouldn’t have minded a Nine-Tails vs. Pain fight next episode.
If I had anything bad to say about this episode, it’s that my goodness the facial animation on Pain during some scenes is butt-ugly!
