Hunter X Hunter – 23
This week’s Hunter X Hunter spends a bit too much time on filler training than on expanding on Gon getting the snot smacked out of him. It was definitely a missed opportunity to get some emotional reaction out of the viewer by drawing out Gon and Canary/Kanaria’s (whatever her name is) confrontation. More shots of that rod to Gon’s face would get anyone mad.
New Prince of Tennis – 11
New Prince of Tennis finally stops wasting time and for once delivers good on a tennis match. It’s ironic because they went too fast. I could have sworn they could have taken two episodes to finish this match. Oh well you can’t win them all. Before that though, poor Fuji, did not even stand a chance against Tezuka. Cannot blame him that instant win aura is really obnoxious. With that Tezuka heads off to become a pro in Germany, which in turns allows the other captains a shot at the spotlight for once.
Code Breaker – Volume 2 – Manga Review
Sakura is dragging my enjoyment of Code Breaker down the drain. She is a kill joy, her role as the moral compass of the manga is so rudimentary and superficial at the moment. I really can’t take the plot seriously when we got a killer followed around by a stupid school girl who does nothing but spout killing is wrong in everyone’s ears. I don’t think I can keep going if all I’m going to see is Sakura butt in and attempt to save Ogami’s targets because she wants to save his purity or something. Are you kidding me that’s stupid.
Hunter X Hunter – 22
Check out the muscles on that old dude. Sweet Jesus he is ripped! This week’s episode of Hunter X Hunter starts off the rescue mission to meet Killua and knock some sense into him. I think I’m more surprised the show spent so much time getting through this gate than anything. It’s not that important and to spend an entire episode covering a single boring chapter is quite odd.
Code Breaker – Volume 1 – Manga Review
Code Breaker is a manga about Sakurakouji Sakura catching new transfer student Ogami Rei setting a group of gangsters on fire with a blue flame. Their paths’ intertwine and Sakura has the awesome responsibility of solving the mystery of how and why Rei is doing what he’s doing. Eventually the two’s sense of justice collide with Sakura having to deal with Rei’s quick-to-kill attitude.
New Prince of Tennis – 10
New Prince of Tennis finally stops wasting time and gets to the good stuff, this week’s match featuring Tezuka versus former Seigaku captain Yamato. However, let’s forget all that for a moment as I have been reading the manga up to this episode and I think I’m going insane by the direction of this show. I’ll just have you know the first two matches this episode casually skips over without a care in the world actually would have taken an episode and a half to animate; there was a lot of match time from the manga the producer just decided to skip. So apparently wasting five or so episodes in the forest training was worth the sacrifice of not animating these matches. What a disappointment.
Veritas – Manga Review
Let us get this out of the way, there is no ending. If you feel like reading through 10 volumes of Veritas knowing there is no reward for your effort then go ahead. It is a huge “to be continued” in which the author simply did not care to start a sequel. I do not blame him because it’s not worth the mess to fix the nonsense that was happening by the last chapter anyway. I do not feel like wasting too much effort nagging at Veritas because frankly by the end I’ll just suggest you read The Breaker instead which executes what Veritas was trying to do much better.
Hunter X Hunter – 21
With Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio finally receiving their hunter licenses, Hunter X Hunter 2011 comes to the end of its first major story arc. It’s been a fun ride so far, but I would be lying to myself if I think Hunter X Hunter 2011 to this point has been better than its 1999 counterpart. Art aside the original manga material this adaptation does so faithfully to recreate seems to pale in comparison to the more developed ’99 Hunter X Hunter.
New Prince of Tennis – 09
Drunken coach continues his quirky training activities by having Echizen and company run away from eagles of all things that are trying to pop the balloon attached to each of them. What? Luckily it starts to set in among the group that all these crazy exercises have improved their endurance, strength, coordination, and skills no matter how non-tennis related it seemed at first. Didn’t see that coming right?
Onani Master Kurosawa – After the Juvenile
Onani Master Kurosawa After the Juvenile is a short 15 minute read light novel that helps to put some closure to the original story. It picks up with Kurosawa, Kitahara, Nagaoka, Takigawa, and the Pizza guy, whatever you call his face, heading off to Osaka for some fun and catching up.
It’s on their little vacation everyone starts to find out people are growing up and simply life sooner or later will tear the group apart if they let it. It’s not too heavy on the drama, but it does a good job of advancing the characters a bit, though sadly Kitahara has done the least growing up and remains the same as ever.
